Owner Annette Aryanpour discovered her passion for lamps during her Interior Design studies and has been handcrafting lamps ever since. Why lamps? Because lamps are sexy, lamps are visceral and at Modkom we are crazy about lighting.

Preferred materials: wood and metal.

"I started turning wood, because it allowed me to work with my favorite material - wood. Yet it is almost like pottery, in that you get an idea, but the spinning blank in front of you starts to have a life of its own. It's always exciting to see what types of shapes emerge. After I am satisfied with a particular form, I duplicate it to make cluster lamps.

I tend to be influenced by Mid-century design and I love the use of walnut from that period. It is still one of my most favorite woods.

When you work with wood, you actually start to respect it more. I only use sustainable woods, or on occasion, reclaimed exotic woods. It is important to me that no wood is wasted, so from leftovers, we usually make candle sticks, tea light votives, vases, flower pots or even magnets. But the main crux of the business are the lamps."
